HISTORY
WIKI LINK: Here.
HISTORY: Michelle has always been involved with activism. Her parents volunteeered at local soup kitchens and other places to help the poor and the homeless. She was five when she went to her first rally. She hasn't stopped activism in any way or form since then. She's nearly been arrested a couple of times but got off due to her 'age' and her parents taking the blame for her (which results in an eye roll or two from her cause she is totally old enough to accept the consequences of her actions).
MJ knew that her family didn't have the money to send her to a good school so she worked her backside off to get a scholarship to an elite school. She also hoped that it would be a chance to make new friends. Unfortunately, it didn't happen straight away as all the students were still fairly immature in her opinion.
She joined the Decathalon Team not only so it would look good on her record but to try and make friends. She worked hard and tried to enjoy her time there. She thought that she should be on the team and not the backup but she is grateful that she got the chance to go to DC not only for the Nationals but also for the light activism that she could do while up there. It was while the rest of the team (minus Peter who had the gall to disappear on them) were in the elevator that broke she realised that she might actually care about them as friends. Not that she'd admit it but she did panic until she knew that Peter had saved them.
PERSONALITY
Michelle Jones grew up as the only daughter of two lower middle class parents. She grew up learning how to defend for herself. Her parents from a young age taught her the history of what it meant to be African American and that while she had it better than even they did that history was only a few decades in her past. Her grandparents often would tell stories of their grandparents and their times as slaves. Her parents never hid the problems that people of African descent faced in America.
Michelle from a young age was determined to fix the world and do what was right for everyone. She didn't ostracise white people like some people did but tried to work with them. Not that many people were willing to listen to a young child, even one who was quite mature for her age. This need to do well lead her to be incredibly observant and able to piece together clues when combined with her intelligence. She could see the people who wanted to truly get out of poverty and those who just didn't care.
She never had many friends growing up, children who own age not enjoying how in their faces she was about the inequalities of the world. She instead turned to books and drawing and eventually learning how to read people really well. She learned how to approach people and get information out of them without them realising what she was doing.
From a young age, it was obvious that Michelle was incredibly smart and she was lucky enough to get a full scholarship to Midtown Science School where she would go on to meet Peter Parker. When she first started she had hoped she would make some friends but realised that in some ways she was better off by herself. She wasn't going to change who she was just to fit in. She did make a name for herself through her activism as well as joining the Decathalon team both in the hopes to make friends though she would never admit it and to look good on her College Admissions. She was too stubborn to let them fail and held Peter responsible though by then she had figured out he was Spiderman through careful observation and agreed with what he was doing. The feeling of winning was amazing and to know that the other members appreciated her was a feeling she wanted to cherish and the realisation that she might actually have friends.
She had always wanted to be friends with Peter but didn't know how to go about it. So she observed him trying to learn as much as she could about him in an effort to become friends with him. It was how she started to notice he would randomly disappear at times and it wasn't long until she realised they were the times when Spiderman appeared. After the realisation, she continued to watch him and keep an eye out for rumours in relation to Spiderman and where he might be. She eventually managed to follow him a few times and noticed enough mannerisms and compared the body shape to Peters to confirm for sure that he was Spiderman.
Over the years she has perfected the art of keeping people at bay because she hasn't got time for your nonsense (nothing to do with social anxiety, really). All she needs is equal rights for her, feminism, Black Lives Matters etc. Of course, over the recent months, she has started to become more friendly with people, mostly Ned and Peter but the rest of the Decathlon team which is weird and she isn't quite sure what to do.
MJ is a perfectionist. She believes that to succeed in life you have to do your absolute best, especially as someone of African descent she'll have a lot more challenges in front of her instead of someone who is white. She's very untrusting and is liable to believe in conspiracy theories though a lot of that is also her trying to get a rise out of people, especially that Captain America and the fall of SHIELD is an entire conspiracy theory. She doesn't trust them because they deal in secrets and even if they say they have released everything to do with SHIELD and their history how do people believe that it is actually the case?
When MJ isn't studying and trying to push herself to be the absolute best, she is either drawing people in distress, as a reminder to herself that the world isn't perfect or running a political commentary blog on Tumblr as well as one for her art.
